Cele made the remarks in Alexandra on Tuesday, hours after soldiers from the South African Defence Force (SANDF) arrive to quell the violence and looting in the area, north of Johannesburg.

“There are people who don’t even know JZ, they just don’t know him. They were asked why are you doing this and they said we are hungry, we don’t have jobs. We want jobs and all that. And then they say, no no no. I remember now, Zuma must come out of prison.

“So that tells you the story that there is genuine anger and that people are sad, that they would’ve loved to see JZ come out of incarceration. But many people who do not even know what the situation is about. They have jumped on the bandwagon and are causing this issue.”

The SANDF landed in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng's hotspots on Tuesday following consecutive days of violence in the country’s economic heartland. The violence was initially referred to as the ‘Free Zuma’ protests, but quickly morphed into large-scale looting at malls and shops across the two provinces. Although no masterminds have been arrested, Cele says that 12 people. who are believed to be instigators of the violence, are under police surveillance.
