Investigators who are probing two separate mass killings in Amaoti and Richmond earlier this month have nabbed eight people so far.
Cele, who was briefed by detectives in the province on Wednesday, says 229 multiple murder incidents were recorded in KZN between April last year and Sunday.
Many of these appear to have been fuelled by drug wars and revenge attacks.
"We experienced that same thing in the rest of the provinces. Our history tells us that Western Cape has been the problematic area when it comes to this shooting and multiple killings.
"For some reason, it has shifted to KZN. KZN has become the most problematic province when it comes to multiple killings and multiple dead bodied on the events where people are shot."
