Cato Ridge couple help foreigners with documents
Updated | By Khatija Nxedlana
The Cato Ridge couple accommodating over 130 foreign nationals who were displaced after the xenophobic attacks in Durban earlier this year say they are still working with the Department of Home Affairs to ensure the migrants have the necessary documents.
Andrew and Rae Wartnaby opened their home to the group who were left homeless, following the closure of the temporary camp in Chatsworth, south of Durban.
Two months have now lapsed since the deadline issued by the Mkhabathini Municipality for the group to vacate the premises saying municipal by-laws are being flouted.
Andrew Wartnaby says the paperwork has caused delays.
"They came to us so traumatised. It's taken this long just for them to relax and feel safe now. Now we're at a point where people can start looking at the future.
"They want to go back to work. They want to carry on with their lives. What we're trying to do is to put things in place so that they're able to do that," he said.
