Case opened after Verulam man attacked while collecting water
Updated | By Lauren Hendricks
Police in Verulam are investigating the attempted carjacking of a man while he was apparently collecting water from a borehole.
The 24-year-old was allegedly attacked by a group of assailants at Trenance Park in the area north of Durban.
It’s alleged they demanded his car keys, but the quick-thinking driver is said to have tossed them into a nearby bush.
When the suspects couldn't find the keys, they apparently assaulted him, broke into car, and took his phone before fleeing.
Verulam Water Crisis Committee member, Roshan Lil-Ruthan, says the area has been without water for eight days.

"I have been liaising with family members [of the victim] and he is having a tough time going through what he just survived and it just angered the community and the family again that a loved one could have been killed over water.
"This is one of many incidents. There are elderly people who have fallen down the steps carrying water to their home or up to their flats."
Earlier this month, a 52-year-old man, also from Trenance Park, is died from a heart attack while fetching water for his family at the same borehole while collecting water for his family.
