Capitec sorry for clients’ zero balance on payday

Payday for some Capitec customers wasn't a day late, but it was a dollar or rands short.

"I almost got a stroke this morning. I go onto my app and my savings account is yesterday's balance which is like nothing," says client Lucille Louis.

Louis says she woke up to find the Capitic Mobile App did not reflect that she was paid on Tuesday.

"The first thing you think is have I been hacked? This was hectic."

Another account holder Lungile Dhlamini says she was confused and started panicking when she saw her balance this morning.

"My balance is R0.00 and I am like how? So I tried to check my transactions. I checked the money 'In' and it's there and I checked money 'Out' and there's nothing and I was like 'Where is my money?

"I tried to use my cell phone banking and it didn't allow me - I ended up getting suspended on that service and I went back to my banking app and suddenly the money was there."

Capitec says its IT team worked quickly to resolve the issue with the app.

It says in an email to Newswatch that although there was a slight delay in balance updates, all card payments and debit orders were not affected.

The bank has apologised to the affected clients for any inconvenience caused.

"Capitec's IT team worked quickly to resolve the issue that clients experienced on its app early on Tuesday morning, 25 April. Although there was a slight delay in balance updates, all card payments and debit orders were not affected, and clients can now continue using the app. We apologise to our clients for any inconvenience caused."
