At least one person was killed near Cape Town International Airport on Monday morning.

A motorist shot an alleged stone thrower on the N2.

Western Cape police spokesperson Novela Potelwa says three others were hurt.

"Reports from the scene indicate that a motorist travelling along Airport Approach at approximately 4:35 am was pelted with stones. The driver of the vehicle responded by firing several shots; as a result, a yet-to-be-identified person was killed."

Law enforcement teams have responded to several incidents of public violence since taxi operators downed keys last week over their vehicles being impounded.

The Transport Department's Collin Msibi has condemned the violence unfolded so far.

"The police are treating that as a crime, and we have seen the buses that are being torched, and it is regrettable, and we condemn such acts of violence and destruction of property."

Msibi says the minister's on her way to Cape Town and will update the nation soon. The strike has brought the city to a standstill, affecting commuters, businesses and tourism.
