"We have reached a point of no return. 60% of Capetonians won't save water, we must now force them," she says.

Mayor Patricia de Lille says level 6B water restrictions will be implemented next month.

De Lille has also revealed that the drought levy might be dropped, saying the municipality wants to bring punitive tariffs against water guzzlers.

"We are moving to Level 6B restrictions of only 50 litres per person, per day, for 150 days. The new restrictions and the associated tariffs will be affected from 1 February 2018," she says.

De Lille says officials are working hard to bring new water sources online.

"Teams are working around the clock to deliver the emergency plan for desalination, ground water, water reuse but this alone will not be enough to avoid Day Zero without savings from Capetonians," she says.
