Some community members locked in a traditional leadership dispute in the Mkhambathini Local Municipality threatened pupils and staff who had nothing to do with the issue.
Residents locked the school gates with heavy chains and padlocks.
KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education spokesperson Kwazi Mthethwa says they are pleased that pupils have returned to the classroom.
"We are happy that finally there has been an agreement, so say those who are disputing the local chieftaincy in that areas will continue to engage with the provincial government while teaching and learning takes place.
"Because this actually has got nothing to do with the Education Department."
