Calls for tougher sentences for reckless drivers

The Road Traffic Management Corporation says reckless and negligent driving needs to be classified as a schedule 5 offence.

It wants current legislation to be reviewed so that more severe punishment can be meted. It could see arrested drivers spending a week behind bars before applying for bail.

The call comes as 141 fatalities and 110 accidents were recorded on the country's roads this past weekend alone.

The corporation's spokesperson, Simon Zwane says they've done all they can to educate people and create awareness, but some drivers continue to blatantly ignore the rules of the road.

Zwane believes breaking traffic laws needs to be regarded as a crime that reflects on one's criminal record for drivers to take road rules seriously.

''It just can't be that you get involved in an accident and people get killed or you are caught driving under the influence of alcohol, the very next day you walk out of custody and the case drags on and on and on.

''They should look at introducing a minimum sentence for at least two years, so that people [will] know that there are consequences,'' he said.
