Calls for TERS benefit to be extended grows in KZN
Updated | By Nomfundo Ngcobo
The IFP has lent its support to
efforts to extend the Covid-19 Temporary Employer-Employee Relief Scheme.
KZN MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environment Affairs Ravi Pillay says they've proposed for the TERS benefit scheme to be extended for the tourism industry.
Pillay says the industry is unlikely to recover any time soon given the current situation.
The Unemployment Insurance Fund says it's considering the possibility of lengthening the period of the scheme.
The KZN IFP's Otto Kunene believes while the tourism industry has been hardest hit by the coronavirus measures, other ailing sectors also need relief.
“Because of the lockdown, businesses are about to fold. They are not able to survive, people are losing jobs,” Kunene said.
"That is why as the IFP we are supporting, provincial government to see if national government can release some financial assistance so these people can continue to run their businesses,” Kunene said.
