Calls for MEC to intervene in mayor-less Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality
Updated | By Nondumiso Dube
The DA in KwaZulu-Natal is appealing to the province’s Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Sipho Hlomuka to address the leadership challenges at the Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality.
The
south coast municipality's yet to elect its mayor and deputy mayor following
last year's local government elections.
The party's provincial leader Francois Rodgers says an inaugural council meeting collapsed in November after it failed to achieve a quorum.
He says the lack of leadership poses a significant threat to basic service delivery.

Rodgers has now called on the MEC to intervene.
"It is an internal matter and it is now starting to play itself out in service delivery and negatively affecting it and it cannot be that the people of that area should be held to ransom because of a political dispute as to who will hold political roles.”
