Calls for illegal fishing hotline
Updated | By Chanelle Lutchman
The spokesperson for the KZN Subsistence Fishermen's Forum says they are requesting the Fisheries Department to create a hotline that fishermen can call if they spot any foreign fishing boats that may be in the waters illegally.
Desmond D'sa says they'll also be going to fishing spots along the North and South Coast to warn fishermen about what's happening out at sea.
Yesterday, about 100 members from the forum held a protest at Durban's North Beach near Snake Park, calling on government to step in and remove the 18 illegal Chinese vessels spotted in South African waters recently.
The chairman of KZN Fishing Internet Forum Jace Naidoo says they're in support of the calls.
"We actually need the South African Navy and the South African marine resources to actually go there and patrol and make sure that these guys do not misuse our resources," he said.
