Calls for heavy sentence for man who raped KZN grandmother
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Social Development has asked the courts to show no leniency on sentencing in a rape case in the province's southern region.
A 21-year-old man's accused of attacking a grandmother in her home in Esibizane Village.
In a media statement, the department detailed how the 84-year-old woman was overpowered by her attacker, who broke into her house while she was alone.
She managed to crawl out of her home later, when he fell asleep.
Her neighbour came to her assistance and the man was arrested.

Social Development MEC Nonhlanhla Khoza's commended police for their swift response but condemned the attack, saying the elderly should not have to live in fear.
She's called for a heavy sentence for the suspect whose family she says had tried to sweep the charges under the carpet by offering the victim compensation for damages.
Meanwhile, the woman and her family are receiving trauma counselling.
