Calls for govt intervention to solve Ugu water crisis

There's a desperate need for government intervention in Ugu on the south coast, where ongoing water challenges are threatening tourism.

"Ugu Municipality is absolutely inept and unable to get water to the taps. This is affecting everyday people on the street, it's not just the tourism industry," warned the hospitality association Fedhasa.

The latest warning comes after Port Edward residents again voiced their frustrations about the crisis.

Critically low water levels have been reported at the Mtamvuna reservoir system.

Fedhasa's Brett Tungay says the municipality needs to find permanent solutions.

"The effect is again always carried by the small players of the industry. The bigger establishments can afford to put in water storage and boreholes, but it's your small restaurants and B&Bs that can't afford it."
