The department says communities need to play a bigger role in eradicating the scourge of gender-based violence. SAPS announced earlier this week that 2 930 women were murdered in the country in the last financial year.

Some 665 cases were in KZN, making it the worst performing province. MEC Weziwe Thusi says they are looking at opening centres to act as safe havens for victims of abuse.

"As a department we have programs in place while working with other stakeholders as we deal with gender-based violence and also intervene where children are being assaulted", she said.

"We are dealing with these issues but we cannot do it alone as government. We need to the community to work with us", Thusi said.
