Call for more police in uMkhanyakude amid spike in cross-border crimes
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
Officials
from the Department of Community Safety in KZN have called on the police to
deploy more law enforcement teams to uMkhanyakude District.
They say operations to crack down on a network of cross-border crimes need a boost.
Residents protested recently over what they say is a spike in illegal activities.
But the demonstrations got out of hand, and roads and vehicles were torched, including a luxury tourist bus from Mozambique.

The department's Kwanele Ncalane says they have noted an increase in hijacking cases.
"We condemn the latest torturing of four vehicles belonging to Mozambique internationals and the bus which was ferrying tourists last week. In a similar vein, we also condemn the continuous incidents of criminality where members of the community are being abducted and the vehicles are stolen.
“In the latest incident, a prominent member of the KZN legislature and his family were a subject of this crime."
