Call for information in Umhlanga fish kill probe
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
A team investigating a mass fish kill at the Umhlanga Estuary has called for the help from locals who might have pictures or information.
Over the weekend a resident stumbled upon the fish at the at the mouth of the estuary, many of the dead and other barely alive.
Marine and Estuarine Research, an ecological consultancy, has taken samples of the fish and water for tests.
In a statement, it says observations were also recorded at the upper estuary and main Umhlanga River above the estuary.

The estuary scientists have also inspected all sewage outlets and pumpstation in the vicinity.
Ward 35 councillor Nicole Bollman says it's very concerning, but only the results can ascertain the cause of the fish kill.
"There is speculation at the moment which I said to people I am not prepared to get into unless they have tangible evidence as to what it is.
"You have people saying its UPL (chemical factory where an arson attack in July 2021 led to a major spill) and you have other residents saying there’s an elevated E. coli sewage reading. Once these tests have been concluded then there can be a bit more of a tangible result and a way forward."
