Call for govt to accelerate food imports

The import food industry lost significant volumes of raw material and 40 000 tons of cold storage capacity because of the unrest that swept through KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.

That’s according to the Association of Meat Importers and Exporters.
CEO Paul Matthew says they have asked government to help accelerate the flow of meat products through the Durban port to prevent food shortages.

He says he also sent a request last Thursday for an urgent meeting with the departments of Agriculture and Trade and Industry but hasn’t heard back.
Costs incurred as a result of the riots have not yet been determined, but Matthew predicts the repercussions will be serious in terms of food security.
