The Msundizi River burst its banks as heavy rain came down on Wednesday.

Some 180 residents in Peace Valley, Snathing and Edendale, were affected by the deluge.

Anthony Waldhausen, who is the chairperson of the Msunduzi Ratepayers and Civic Association, says the city needs to clean the drainage systems on a daily basis to avoid any blockages when heavy rains hit.

Waldhausen says long-term solutions are also needed.

"In the CBD, the drainage system is completely blocked. What we are finding also challenging is that when the municipality staff has removed all the blockages to the muck that comes out of the drainage system, it is just dropped on the pavement side and is left there.

"They are supposed to come and pick it up, but it is left there for days on end and when the rain comes back again, all what has been removed from the drainage goes back in again. We are just concerned that the poor workmanship from the municipality's staffing."
