Call for govt to subsidise commuters' taxi fares

The National Taxi Alliance has called on the government to subsidise commuters' fare costs.

Business owners, hard hit by rising fuel prices, say they have been left with no choice but to hike the cost of trips by a couple of rands.
The alliance's Theo Malele says they understand that commuters are in the same boat, but they need to keep their profits up.

"In order for us to be able to market related fares as opposed to charity fares that we currently are doing.
“Yes, we are a community-based business and understand the dynamics of our commuting muscles. There is absolutely nothing that we can do. We have been absorbing these pressures for a long time."
The NTA has also threatened a national shutdown to put pressure on the government to deal with exorbitant petrol prices.
