Call for govt to 'move out of the way' on electricity generation

An energy expert says the government needs to cut the red tape so people can get their own electricity.
The country is currently under stage 4 load shedding after more of Eskom's generating units broke down.

In an emergency briefing on Wednesday, the power utility revealed it's currently using nine million litres of diesel a day to support the system.
Energy analyst Chris Yelland says government needs to move out the way of those who can source their own energy.
"Here I am talking about self-generation, distributed generation, battery storage and all the other options that customers have. Customers can bring solutions to the table much quicker than government can."

Eskom COO Jan Oberholzer says they are looking into other options, especially with the Russia-Ukraine conflict threatening oil prices.
"We are looking at fuel oil and we are also looking at coal. So unfortunately, that crystal ball that we need to look into, is not that clear. We are also taking note of the fact that what is happening with Russia and Ukraine and the possible negative impact that may have on the availability of diesel volumes."
