'Call for ban on white, Indian funeral businesses is illegal'
Updated | By Lethiwe Mdluli
A call being made by a funeral association to ban all white and Indian-owned funeral companies from black communities is illegal and could lead to violence.
That's the view of the Doves Group. Doves has been responding to recent calls made by the National Funeral Practitioners Association of South Africa.
The association wants all white and Indian-owned funeral companies banned from operating in black communities, especially in parts of KZN.
The association's Nkosentsha Shezi says black-owned funeral parlours should be the ones building township economies.
"In our country, basically the White and Indian funeral parlours have [already] reserved markets of the White and Indian communities interited from racial supremacy based on the country's history," he says.
Meanwhile, Doves says changes in the industry should happen in a way that makes operators successful.
Doves says it became a 100% black-owned company in 2006 when it was acquired by the NUMSA Investment Company.
