Mabuza made the remarks during his closing address at the 9th South African AIDS Conference in Durban.

"It is estimated that there are almost 250 000 new infections every year and our target is to eliminate new infections. The gap is too big and we must close it. Stigma and discrimination remain the biggest challenge in not reaching this target", he said.

Mabuza says the continued discrimination against people living with HIV is unacceptable... adding more dialogue within communities is needed.

"We must be compassionate and ensure that available services are provided with the necessary respect and dignity to all our people", Mabuza said
