Call for audit into hijacked Joburg buildings

There are calls for the Johannesburg mayor to institute an audit to determine the number of hijacked buildings in the city.

The South African National Civic Organisation in Gauteng believes it would be the first step in tackling the issue.
Sanco says authorities should also remove all illegal occupants of buildings and give them alternative accommodation - while speeding up the construction of low-cost housing near commercial centres.

At least 77 people died in a fire at a hijacked building in Marshalltown last week.
The disaster has reopened the debate on disused blocks of flats that have fallen into the hands of criminal syndicates who collect rent from squatters.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has described it as "a wake-up call - saying it's time start addressing housing in the inner cities.
