Cabinet in the firing line in National Assembly

The country's ministers have come under scathing criticism from some MPs who are accusing them of incompetence.

A parliamentary debate is underway after the DA tabled a motion of no-confidence in the entire cabinet.

The party's leader John Steenhuisen says the national executive is bloated, but very little progress in the country to show for it.

"Most inefficient and one of the most corrupt cabinets in the world and Europe's largest economy Germany has a cabinet of just 16, but here in South Africa, we have 38 ministries and for what?

"The long-awaited lifestyle audits for ministers - nothing. Action against those mentioned in the high-level pane report into state security - nothing. Repercussions for being linked to Bosasa, Digital Vibes and Guta corruption - nothing."

The EFF's Veronica Mente has pointed what she says are failures by the transport ministry.

"Take minister Fikile Mbalula; under his leadership, we have seen our rail transport network disseminated beyond recognition. Traffic departments across the country are unable to process driving licences renewals and taxi violence has become normal in this country."

ANC Deputy Chief Whip, Doris Dlakude, has defended the cabinet saying the national executive is committed to good governance.

She says members of the cabinet table reports and strategic plans of the the departments and entities they lead, which are then scrutinised and adopted by portfolio committees.

"This should be the basis from which the performance of members of the executive is assessed and evaluated. There is no portfolio committee that has proposed a motion of no confidence of any member of the executive."

Dlakude says the motion tabled by the DA is part of the party's sustained manner of destructive criticism.

She's called it an aggressive onslaught which is not founded on the objective to build the country.
