A 12-year-old girl was allegedly raped on her way to school in Bulwer, in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.
The KZN Education Department says the Grade 7 pupil had forgotten to carry a mask to school and was turned back at the school's screening point on Monday.
Officials say she indicated that she lived not far from the school and would go home to fetch a mask.
When she arrived back at the school, she told the principal that she had been raped and was immediately rushed to a nearby doctor.
Police spokesperson, Thembeka Mbele says that Donnybrook detectives arrested a 17-year-old suspect on Tuesday morning.
