Budget speech: Godongwana urged not to hike fuel taxes
Updated | By Celumusa Zulu
The Automobile Association has urged Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana not to increase the taxes on fuel when he tables the budget on Wednesday.

The AA says the two largest levies on fuel, the General Fuel Levy and the Road Accident Fund levy, currently make up R6.13 on every litre of petrol and diesel sold in the country.
It’s concerned that the levies, which have remained the same since 2022, will be hiked.
AA spokesperson Eleanor Mavimbela says South Africans cannot afford to pay any more for fuel.

She says the current levies already generate billions of rands in revenue for the government.
"If we are not paying that General Fuel Levy or the Road Accident Fund levy, in essence, we will be paying R6.13 less for petrol.
"Not increasing the fuel levy definitely will be accepted, and we will be grateful for it. But we do understand that it is a short-term solution and that it is not really sustainable."
