Brother pays touching tribute to Joost

The brother of the late former Springbok player, Joost van der Westhuizen has paid tribute during the memorial service currently taking place at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.

Pieter van Der Westhuizen says his brother who worked hard to make his country proud - has always been determined since he was young. 

"He was very determined to succeed. We were a simply family - he took us further and became a Springbok. When he told me he will become a Springbok at school - I thought it's just another wish. He worked very hard to become the Springbok that he is today," he said.

The legendary rugby player who suffered from a form of Motor Neuron Disease died at his Johannesburg home after being admitted to hospital in a critical condition at the weekend. 

Earlier, current World Rugby chairperson Bill Beaumont says the whole rugby fraternity is grieving together with Van der Westhuizen's family.

"He is one of the great all-time players. No matter where you're from - you recognise greatness and he had it both on and off the field," he said. 

Meanwhile, President Jacob Zuma has declared an official provincial funeral for the former Springbok captain.
