Bridge collapse: victims' families to be compensated
Updated | By Zongile Mthimkhulu
Construction and engineering firm Murray and Roberts says one of its main concerns following the Sandton bridge collapse is supporting the families of the deceased as well as those hurt in the tragedy.
Two people were killed when a pedestrian bridge over the M1 highway in Johannesburg collapsed on Wednesday.
It has been confirmed that the driver of a vehicle with a Durban number plate passed away.
More than 20 people were hurt.
Murray and Roberts Group CEO Henry Laas inspected the site yesterday.
''The initial support is obviously focused on making sure that the people who are injured get the necessary medical attention and medical support.
''We will assist them in covering the costs there and as far as the funerals is concerned - the two deceased - we are in contact with families and we will provide the necessary support there as well,'' he said.
The cause of the collapse is being investigated.
