BREAKING: Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe resigns, ends 37-year reign
Updated | By ECR Newswatch
Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe has stepped down as head of state following a 37-year reign.
This after impeachment proceedings against Mugabe got underway in Zimbabwe's parliament.
He's been president since the country's independence - 37 years ago.
The historic impeachment debate began shortly after ousted vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa told the 93-year-old Mugabe to step down.
The presidents of Angola and South Africa - fellow SADC countries - were dispatched to Harare to discuss the crisis.
Mnangagwa, formerly one of Mugabe's closest allies, said in a statement that Zimbabweans had "clearly demonstrated without violence their insatiable desire" for Mugabe to resign.
