BREAKING: Oscar granted bail of R10 000

Oscar Pistorius has just been granted R10 000 bail by the North Gauteng High Court.

The Court earlier heard from Pistorius' defence team that the paralympian athlete could only afford bail of the same amount. They argued that Pistorius does not pose a flight risk.

Advocate Barry Roux told the court that Pistorius is willing to continue with house arrest but with stricter conditions if the court wishes.

Roux stated that under previous bail conditions, the athlete was allowed to leave his uncle's Waterkloof home between the hours of  7am and midday but has agreed to abandon that right.

"Should he - for whatever reason - need to leave the premises he would do so with the permission of either the investigating officer which is also subject to your sanctioning, my lord.

"He also agreed subject to your sanctioning that he would submit himself to electronic monitoring to be monitored in terms of Section 62 F of the Criminal Procedure Act," he said.

Meanwhile State Prosecutor Gerrie Nel said while they were not opposed to bail, as a convicted murderer, the conditions of Pistorius' bail must be stricter.

"We still believe that we will have a good case to oppose but knowing where the accused will be for the remainder of the day, knowing that we can monitor the accused persuaded us not to oppose.

"We still believe that this accused being convicted of murder - looking at a sentence of 50 years - may be a flight risk," he said.

Pistorius also plans to head to the Constitutional Court to appeal his murder conviction. The matter has been postponed to April next year.
