Updated | By Shaun Ryan
President Jacob Zuma has stepped down as South Africa's Head of State.
Listen to the podcast or read the breaking news on Zuma's resignation below.
Zuma addressed the nation at the Union Buildings in Pretoria a short while ago.
Zuma said he has decided to resign as President with immediate effect, even though he did not agree with the ANC’s decision to recall him.
Zuma says he has always been and always will be a disciplined member of the ANC.
The ruling party announced earlier this week that it had decided to recall Zuma so that the party’s new president, Cyril Ramaphosa could assume the country’s leadership in alignment with its own constitution.
Ramaphosa was elected ANC president in Johannesburg in December last year.
The party had given Zuma until today to resign as Head of State.
Failing which, the ANC said it would vote with opposition parties in Parliament during a Motion of No Confidence that had been scheduled for tomorrow.
Zuma says he will continue to dedicate all his energy towards the attainment of the ANC’s policies, especially Radical Economic Transformation.
Zuma thanked South Africans for the privilege of serving as president since 2009.
