A seven-year-old boy has drowned at a public swimming pool in Margate, just opposite the south coast town's main beach.
KZN medics say when they arrived on the scene, lifeguards were already performing CPR on the child.
He'd been found lying in the water. Netcare 911's Chris Botha says paramedics worked tirelessly for 45-minutes to try and save the boy.
"The advance life support paramedic arrived and placed the child on a ventilator and administered the resuscitation drug but tragically after extensive - the child was declared dead there at the pool," he said.
Meanwhile there have been two near drowning incidents in other parts of the country also involving children.
In the Western Cape, a 13-year-old girl landed in a rip current and was pulled under the water at Strand Beach yesterday.
Her heart started beating again after medics performed CPR while transporting the child to a nearby hospital.
In Johannesburg, a two-year-old boy's recovering in hospital after he fell into the swimming pool at his Mulbarton home.
