Bonginkosi Khanyile sentenced to three years house arrest

Fees Must Fall activist, Bonginkosi Khanyile has been sentenced to three years house arrest for the crimes he committed during the unrest in the higher education sector in 2016.

The Durban University of Technology student was last year convicted on charges of public violence and possession of a dangerous weapon - among others.
In handing down sentence, Magistrate Sphiwe Hlophe has emphasized the seriousness of Khanyile's offences.
He said he agrees the fight for free education was a worthy one and that the Fees Must Fall movements succeeded raising awareness around the issue and putting pressure on government.
The magistrate also slammed the violence and vandalism that accompanied the process as well as he disruption of teaching and learning.

He's given Khanyile a fine of R5000 or three years in prison wholly suspended for five years and placed him under house arrest for three years during which Khanyile will only be allowed to leave his place of residence to attend university.
