Khanyile, who was arrested during a protest at DUT at the end of 2016, made a number of admissions yesterday which, in effect, saw him confess to charges of public violence, being in possession of a dangerous weapon and failing to comply with a police officer's orders.

It was part of an agreement with the State which also saw the remaining charges, abandoned.

Khanyile addressed a crowd of supporters outside court, after proceedings.

"It means that I'm to sustain a criminal record. Employers in South Africa are very reluctant to employ individuals that have criminal records. I'm equally happy because we never went back into prison and we are outside," Khanyile said.

He's due back in court in October, for sentencing.
