The homemade devices were thrown into the Musjidur Rahman on Monday.

They landed on the grounds.

The suspects fled after being interrupted by a patrolling security officer who alerted police.

Yusuf Desai, one of the mosque's trustees, says he was shocked by the discovery.

"There was a lot of wiring. They tried to detonate it, and as soon as worshippers came to the mosque about 6 o'clock. It could have caused a lot of damage, and probably someone could have died."

Desai says he can't understand why anyone would try to carry out such an act.

"You can't explain why this could have happened at this point in time. Is somebody angry at the work that we do, or is it Islamophobia? Whoever the perpetrators are, they are unaware of the contribution the mosque plays in the Durban area."

KZN police are actively searching for the suspects.

Asghar Khan of Al Jama-ah in KZN says the culprits must be dealt with harshly.

"There must be no tolerance for such heinous acts in our society. It is evident to us (Musjidur Rahman) that it has been targeted for its support for freedom and justice. We denounce any attempt to intimidate or harm individuals or institutions that advocate for the rights of the oppressed."
