The body of a suspected robber has been pulled from the Umlazi river in Lamontville, south of Durban.
Community members chased the 21-year-old man into the river after an alleged crime. Police spokesperson, Nqobile Gwala, says the armed man and 2 other suspects robbed a person of their cellphone and money.
Gwala says the robber stabbed the victim.
"At this stage a case of robbery has not been opened by the victim has he is still in hospital. Community members had mobilised to chase the suspect while the other 2 suspects managed to flee," she said.
The suspect somehow drowned in the river while trying to escape the community members," Gwala said.
"An inquest docket has been opened at Lamontville police station for further investigation," she said.
