49-year-old Wayne Parkes and two others were arrested in 2016, after one of them visited a website that was under surveillance by the US's Department of Homeland Security.

On raiding his home, police discovered a cache of illicit images, including some of a local child.

A statement was taken from the child, during which allegations of rape and sexual assault emerged.

Yesterday, Parkes appeared before Durban’s special Sexual Offences Court, to make formal admissions before a magistrate.

In his statement, and now forming part of the court record, Parkes has admitted to two counts of raping a 6-year-old girl from his neighbourhood as well as 3,287 of creating and being in possession of child pornography.

The case has been rolled over to allow the magistrate time to go through the images.

Parkes could indeed be looking at life in prison, the minimum prescribed sentence for the rape of a minor.
