Bluff awarded prestigious international tourism status

It is another boost for local tourism. The Bluff has been awarded International Whale Heritage Site status - making South Africa the only country on the continent with the accreditation.

Aside from being the go-to place for whale watching, the recognition means there will be a fresh effort to protect whales, dolphins and porpoises and their habitats. The Bluff is also home to the largest land based whaling station in the world - which is popular with locals and tourists.

Helga Du Preez is with the Soul of South Durban Community Tourism Association - which made the application. She says it took them two years to achieve the status.

"We definitely believe it will have a positive impact on employment opportunities. We also believe it will open doors for us and the museum we want to create", she said.

"There is also a whole research and education aspect to benefit from this", Du Preez said.

The Bluff shares the status with Hervey Bay in Australia.
