Bloemfontein City Hall set alight
Updated | By OFM News
Bloemfontein’s historic City Hall went up in flames on Wednesday evening.
The fire started after disgruntled municipal workers clashed with police.
Members of the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (Samwu) were gathered outside the Mangaung Metro Municipality’s offices, waiting to meet with the union’s provincial chairperson.
According to police spokesperson, Sam Makhele, this meeting was dispersed by police using stun grenades and rubber bullets.
Police say it was an illegal gathering.
Samwu chairperson in the Free State, Congo Matshepe, says their members were not responsible for the fire.
He told OFM News their members were standing outside the building when the fire started.
