Blessers: More vigilant parents needed to stem tide
Updated | By Chanelle Lutchman
A teacher and social worker from Pholosho Secondary School in Joburg's Alexandra township believes parents need to be more aware of their children's whereabouts.
Florina Hlongwane says teenage pregnancy is rife at her school with a Grade 7 pupil falling pregnant last year.
She's calling on the Department of Basic Education to implement more life orientation classes.
''Talking and talking, awareness workshops and one-on-ones really works whereby you show them that the things that they're doing are not okay because they have to go to school. That is the main important thing. The blessers and the baby daddies proceed with whatever they are doing,'' she said.
Hlongwane is part of a panel discussing the 'blessers' phenomenon and teenage pregnancy at the Albany Hotel in the Durban.
