Slashed prices and bulk deals have meant a busy and somewhat chaotic day for many retailers across the country as shoppers have taken full advantage of Black Friday.

Black Friday, which has gained popularity in South Africa in recent years,  originated in the US and is marked the day after the Thanksgiving holiday.

Newswatch spoke to several customers who were looking for bargains at stores including Clicks, Checkers and Game at Gateway Shopping Centre in Umhlanga.

"It was crazy but we just loved the specials," said one woman.

"It's madness. The queues are long and the floors are dirty. It's terrible," a shopper in Umhlanga added.

"Black Friday is an exciting concept but unfortunately the advertising prior to this was not good enough for customers. People only got to know of Black Friday on Black Friday," remarked a man about the frenzy.

"The concept of Black Friday is new to us because it's not a very South African thing. On the plus side, we enjoy the low prices so we're benefiting from that completely," said another customer.

"R400 jeans for R200. Best day of my life," a youngster said.

"The clothing specials are really nice but with the food. It's a bit crazy."

Pick 'n Pay's Marketing Director Adrian Naude says South Africans have seriously taken to Black Friday.

"It's been crazy, crazy busy. We're trading until late today. I've spoken to my colleagues around the country and they're all busy - in Johannesburg, Cape Town and in Durban," he said.
