Police detained a 29-year-old man in Pinetown in connection with the murder of the 18-year-old.

The slain first-year engineering student died in hospital two weeks after being placed on life support.

He was stabbed and robbed of his cellphone and laptop while studying in a lecture hall last month.

Family spokesperson, Tshepo Mokoena says they have mixed emotions.

"Obviously, it opens up the wounds which are still fresh. We are excited that there is a suspect. We are praying and truly hoping that it's not just a suspect, but it happens this person can be proven indeed that this person murdered our son."

"So, as much as we are happy that somebody has been apprehended it has opened up the pain and the loss that we are still trying to recover from as a family," he said.

Police say Ndlovu's cell phone and a knife were found on the accused.

Mokoena says the family heard about the arrest on social media.

"We were not informed on time, the reasoning for that is, after [Ndlovu's] parents received the text from the investigating officer we had already seen media reports that there is a suspect that is caught," says Mokoena.

The suspect appeared in court on Wednesday.
