Bird flu: Alert for KZN farmers
Updated | By Puseletso Petersen
Farmers from the north of the province are again being urged to be on alert and and ensure they have the necessary measures in place following the spread of avian flu to KwaZulu-Natal.

The call is being made by the KZN Agricultural Union after a strain of avian flu was found on a farm near Vryheid.
It's led to the culling of thousands of birds.
The Agriculture Department has quarantined surrounding farms in the area as a precautionary measure.

Kwanalu's Sandy le Marque says they are very worried.
"Kwanalu is concerned with respect to the outbreak that has been discovered in the Vryheid area. We are asking all livestock producers - particularly poultry owners - to ensure they have strict bio-security control measures on their properties and that they adhere to the movement protocol," she said.
The department of Agriculture has urged the public not to panic and has assured consumers that chicken in the province is still safe.
