That's the view of Nazeer Jamal from Kweza Environmental Consulting, which will be leading a massive clean-up operation at the Beachwood Mangroves in Durban today.
This is to mark International Coastal Clean-up day, which has been celebrated by coastlines from Richards Bay to Cape Town.
Jamal says they collect data on what type of waste and quantities they find at the beaches.
"The data helps us assist the impact human kind has on the environment from the time waste is still inland", he said.
"From the land waste goes into the river and into the ocean, so this is why we have to understand that impact", Jamal said.
