Basic Education: Paying registration fees at schools is unlawful
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Parents are being encouraged to report schools that demand registration fees to enrol their children.
The Basic Education Department says this practice is unlawful.
Spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga says the department has been inundated with calls from parents whose children couldn’t be registered because they couldn’t afford the fees.
He says parents are warned to be aware of such schools as well and to report this should they come across such an incident.

"So this is a warning from the department to advise schools to refrain from this activity as it generates unnecessary tension between parents and schools but also a lot of pressure," He says.
Public schools will be opening on Monday after the start of the new school year was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
