Basic Education blasts ‘silly’ petition against unisex bathroom proposal

The Department of Basic Education says it’s bemused by a petition to halt plans to introduce unisex toilets in public schools.

This is after parents started a petition against the department’ plans to abolish gender-specific toilets.

The new bathrooms are part of a list of suggestions made by the department for a more inclusive learning environment.

Basic Education spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga says the issue has been blown out of proportion.

“The petition is silly because it’s informed by nothing. You can’t be moved by hearsay. Wait for the department’s communication. We have never imposed anything on anyone, we’ve always been transparent.

“There’s no need to put together a petition. There will be a time to submit written comments to the government in terms of how people feel.”

Mhlanga said the department is trying to create an inclusive environment at schools.

“We are saying let’s work together to create an inclusive environment in school where nobody feels they are excluded because of their chosen identity.

“The Constitution guarantees everyone a right to choose, at the moment the schools currently do not provide that environment.

“However, nothing will be imposed on anyone. People are panicking and starting petitions based on a document that has not been made public. We urge everyone to please calm down.”
