Barriers in online registration of rural students need to be addressed, says expert

An education finance expert says institutions of higher learning need to address the ongoing challenges affecting online registrations and financial aid applications.

Mary Maponya's been commenting as tertiary institutions open student registrations for the 2025 academic year.
'Institution registration has faced several challenges in South Africa over the years, and some of the issues include capacity constraints,” Maponya said.

“Institutions are struggling to accommodate growing student numbers, and the insufficient funding leading to financial exclusion of deserving students and the complex registration processes that are causing frustrations and delays.
Maponya, who is the executive head of education finance specialist Fundi, says some students, especially those in rural areas, are still struggling to access these online systems.
'We have seen rural and disadvantaged students facing barriers to registration due to limited access."
She's encouraged prospective students to apply early to avoid delays:
'And sometimes there are students applying late causing registration backlogs and some of the students they submit incomplete documents."
