Bail conditions for UKZN staff suspected of selling places relaxed

Three people suspected of being part of a syndicate that has been selling places at UKZN's Medical School have had their bail conditions relaxed.

Varsha and Hiteshkumar Bhatt and Preshni Hiramun made their second appearance in the Pinetown Magistrate's Court today.
The National Prosecuting Authority's Natasha Ramkisson-Kara says the matter has been postponed until March next year.
"The matter was postponed to the 4th of March 2018 for further investigation. Bail for these accused was extended. They are now allowed to travel and also their reporting conditions should be twice a month to their nearest police station," she said.

The Bhatts, who own the Little Gujarat restaurants in the city, were arrested by members of the Hawks in May while their homes and businesses were raided.
Their arrest, as well as that of Hiramun's, follow intensive investigations after it emerged places to study medicine and pharmacy at the Nelson Mandela School of Medicine were being sold for thousands of Rands.
