Police in Magudu were alerted to a vehicle on fire on the R66 between Pongola and Nongoma on Monday night.
National police spokesperson Vish Naidoo says an inquest has been launched to determine the circumstances around the incident and the cause of death.
"Police had discovered a badly burnt human body inside the vehicle. The purpose of the inquest is to determine the circumstances and the cause of death of the person found inside the vehicle.
"Ownership of the vehicle has been confirmed and the owner had stated that the vehicle was being used by her missing brother, a National Freedom Party councillor candidate.
"However, this information is not sufficient to conclude at this stage that the body may be that of the councillor candidate."
DNA testing will be conducted to determine the identity of the victim.
